Senior Athletes Honored

On Wednesday, May 9, the Athletic Department and Booster Club honored the departing seniors from the class of 2012 who have excelled in athletics and inside the classroom for the past 4 years.

The celebration began with a Booster Club sponsored ice cream social with the help of some senior parents. Three years ago, the Boosters instituted a senior athlete award, the Mariner Booster Award (MBA) to be given to the male and female senior athletes that personify the values of commitment, sportsmanship, school pride and spirit. This year the award was given to Shahin Marzband (football, basketball, track) and Jocelyn Maroun (rally squad). Athletes and guests then congregated to celebrate the athletic signings and commitments of the seniors.

The following join Jessica Marin (committed to Academy of Arts for softball) and Carlos Briones (committed to Santa Clara University for golf) as future scholar athletes:

• Jade Santos will play volleyball at Dominican University. Jade played four years at Moreau Catholic and was all-league in her junior and senior years. Jade played outside hitter and led the team in kills and also was second in digs. Jade will join a long list of Mariners who have excelled at Dominican University, but is the first to play volleyball for the Penguins.
• Tim Kondo will play football at Oberlin College in Ohio. Tim played quarterback for the JV squad that went 9-1 his sophomore year, but transitioned to an outstanding defensive back when moved up to varsity. Known for his quickness through the line, Tim became famous for the pressure he instituted against opposing quarterbacks runningbacks, garnering attention from college scouts.

• Chris Baca, Sean Godfrey, Jeremy Imlach, Adam Sagapolu, Sean Regner, Zack Martin - College of San Mateo, football

At the Evening of Excellence on May 2nd, the following senior athletes also received special awards:

• Athletic Medal (Outstanding Senior Athlete Award): Chris Baca and Jessica Marin
• Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award: Carlos Briones and Karra Gardin
• US Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award: Richard L'Heureux and Lisa Wilson
