Application Requirements
Please check FAMILY CONNECTION, college catalogues, The MCHS College Handbook,  "College View", or the college web links listed above to research the subject and grade point average minimums for all the universities and colleges you are interested in.  Many students are eligible even when they think they're not.  Check with your counselor. See our Testing page  for information and links to the SAT Reasoning, ACT, and SAT Subject tests and requirements for college admissions.

CHECK OUR COLLEGE SEARCH LINKS ABOVE AND THE ONLINE VERSION OF FAMILY CONNECTION TO HELP IN YOUR SEARCH.

For students interested in Chabot, Ohlone, or other community colleges, see your counselor. The community college application process begins during the second semester. Check our "Applications and Admissions" links above or use the "ASSIST" web link to help you with transfer requirement information.

Please select or consider about 4 to 8 universities or colleges to which you want to apply. GENERATE OPTIONS AND ALTERNATIVES! Apply to a variety of colleges you'd be willing to attend.

U.C. requires one application to be used to apply to all 8 campuses. C.S.U. requires one application for each campus to which you apply.
ALL UNIVERSITIES REQUIRE A FEE TO PROCESS YOUR APPLICATION.

U.C. and private universities require an essay. See the section, "Supporting Documents", for further information.

ENGINEERING APPLICANTS: Make sure you carefully read the admissions requirements for each college and university you're interested in applying. There are specific SAT Subject test requirements in addition to high school course work.

ATHLETES:  Do you wish to play intercollegiate sports at college? Visit the N.C.A.A. web site. You may need to complete the N.C.A.A. Eligibility Center Form. Forms are available online or from Ms. Abdenour.

Do you want to live on campus? Make sure you request information and a housing application as soon as you apply to the school.

Application Deadlines
U.C. and C.S.U. have a "priority filing deadline" from November 1 thru 30th.  Your application must be submitted by November 30.

Most campuses in the C.S.U. system start taking applications October 1--check with your counselor or the campus first!

Private universities have different deadlines—check the application carefully or see your counselor!

Supporting Documents
These include Transcripts, Essays, and Letters of Recommendation.

  1. Transcripts are copies of your semester grades. Some colleges want 6th semester grades (grade through the end of your junior year) and/or 7th semester grades (grades through your 1st semester senior year). The college you decide to attend will also want your final transcript. Read your application carefully to determine which transcript the college wants. Request forms are available in the C.R.C. Official requests cost $2.   Submit your request forms to the Counseling assistant with the correct fee.

  2. Essays: U.C. and private universities require a personal essay about your goals and about yourself. Suggestions on how to write such an essay are available from your counselor. Be creative, be brave, be clear and use proper grammar and punctuation.

  3. Letters of Recommendation : Many colleges and scholarships require, in addition to your application, a letter of recommendation. Usually this means one from a teacher and one from your counselor.  A good recommendation letter takes time to write--please allow 2 to 4 weeks for the author to write such a letter. Talk to you potential letter writers now! If they are willing, follow these steps:

  4. Prepare a resume and complete your senior biography (on Family Connection). List all your awards since 9th grade, your community service positions, and any jobs you've held. Include a short paragraph of your goals. Xerox it.

  5. Your teacher can read your Senior biography on their Family Connection account.  They can also upload their written recommendation to Family Connection.  Remember to "sign" the FERPA release, where appropriate.

  6. Attach a stamped (check the postage), addressed envelope with the recommendation form.

  7. Submit all of the above to the writer at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance in advance of the deadline date. USE the Recommendation request feature on Family Connection!
