Choral Music
Listed below are the course offerings for the
2007-2008 school year in the area of Choral Music. All courses are taught under
the direction of Mr. Graham Scott Barton.
864. Chorus
Full year, 10 units
This course provides an opportunity for students to participate in a vocal
performance ensemble. Students will learn basic vocal and choral techniques,
music history, sight-singing skills and music theory. In addition, students
will learn historical, cultural and societal contexts for choral music and
composers of choral music. Students will be expected to critique their own and
the performance of others. Public performance is required.
866. Concert
Choir
Full year, 10 units
This course provides an opportunity for continued growth in vocal performance.
Students will build upon their prior musical knowledge to develop intermediate
vocal and choral techniques, as well as intermediate music history, theory and
sight-singing skills. Students will be expected to possess intermediate
performance skills in both choral and solo singing. They will be required to
critique their own and the performance of others. Public performance is
required.
856. Honors
Choir
Full Year, 10 units
This course provides an opportunity for students to develop advanced and
refined vocal and choral techniques. Advanced knowledge and skill in music
history, theory and sight-singing is expected. In-depth research of music
history and composers is expected. Students will have the skills to critique
their own and the performance of others. Students will show facility in singing
in at least three languages. Public performance and competition is required.
854. Beginning
Singing
Semester, 5 units
This class will serve as an introduction to singing for non-singers. Breathing,
diction, tonality and some history/theory will be taught. Public performance is
not required.
858. Vocal
Jazz
Full Year, 10 units
Jazz Choir is designed for the advanced choral students who wish to gain
performance experience in vocal jazz. This course provides an in-depth
investigation of the jazz idiom. Students will learn theory, history and
performance techniques.
874. Music
Teaching Assistant (Chorus)
Semester, 5 units, Pass/Fail, Grades 11-12
This class is for the student who has taken music classes and is interested in
demonstrating knowledge of the assignments and assisting the teacher. This
course will give students an introduction to the profession of teaching. Piano
skills highly desired.
