Frank Sumares

Guest Artist Jazz Concert
Took place April 13, 7:00 p.m.
The Jazz Ensemble performed three new works we commissioned this year. In addition,  they were joined in performance by Jazz Trumpeter and recording artist Jeff Bunnell. Jeff plays with the Tom Kubis big band.  He has an impressive studio resume that includes about 25% of the movies, t.v. shows, and commercials you have seen in recent years. Joining us is saxophonist Mary Fettig. Mary has an incredible resume of jazz work, including playing with the Stan Kenton Band.

Our last guest artist is Frank Sumares. Frank is a local jazz piano player and teacher. He is currently teaching at San Jose State, and a fixture in the Bay Area Music scene. He has an impressive resume that includes musical director for the Count Basie Band. Frank just received the California Jazz Educator of the year award. He comes into Moreau several times a year to work with the jazz ensemble.

Several students that have been the cornerstone of the jazz ensemble for the last three years will be playing their last concert at Moreau Catholic. This includes Albert Baliwas, who made the state honor jazz band for the second time, as one of only two alto saxes chosen in the state of California. Albert was also a finalist last year for the National Grammy
Band.

They won the playoff competition and were awarded the Sweepstakes Trophy. Congratulations to Albert Baliwas, Daniel Macauyag, J. C. Support School Workshop
On March 2, 82 band students from our supports students came to Moreau Catholic for a workshop with Ted Newton and the Moreau Catholic Honors Wind Esnemble. The students spent two hours in rehearsal on their concert
music with the Moreau students. They were served a pizza lunch by the Moreau Catholic Band parents.

Claymation movies by students on the web
These amazing claymation movies created by freshman Visual Art students. The main objective of this project was to create a visual story that focused on the theme, transformation. In this unit, students studied the history and  process of clay animation. The class watched clips from claymation movies such as: The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Chicken Run.
