Theology

Welcome to the Theology Department! Our philosophy is grounded in the values and traditions of our Catholic faith and our Holy Cross identity. To guide us, we look to the Gospels, and the educational philosophy of Blessed Basil Moreau, founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Toward that end, our Theology program seeks to educate the mind in ways of higher order thinking and theological studies and methods, as well as to form the heart by nurturing faith and deepening spirituality.

Moreau follows the curriculum framework developed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for our theology courses.

• Freshman are introduced to the traditions, history and themes of the Congregation of Holy Cross and explore Hebrew Scripture and the New Testament
• Sophomores study Christology and Church History
• Juniors begin with a semester focused on Social Justice followed by a Morality course
• Seniors continue to enjoy a range of upper division electives.

Our upper division electives include: The Bible as Literature, Prophecy and Apocalyptic Literature, Major Religions, and Social Justice. Seniors can also enroll in a full-year leadership course as part of the Campus Ministry Team.

We offer four separate retreat experiences, each tailored for the four classes at Moreau, culminating with our senior Kairos retreat, in existence since 1965. With our four-year Holy Cross Social Justice program, students enter into a unique space in which course content, service activities and their retreat experiences facilitate a rich praxis.

Graduation Requirements*

40 units

Students who transfer to Moreau Catholic as sophomores are required to take 30 units, and those who transfer as juniors are required to take 20 units. Students are required to complete the Holy Cross Social Justice Program, which includes 60 hours of community service and completion of a capstone project.
