Students interested in Theatre Arts start with our introductory course, Theater Arts Perspective, where they develop performance skills through characterization, pantomime, and improvisation. Students create and perform original skits, learn to analyze and critique live productions, and explore theatre as an art form throughout the ages. They gain experience with theatre technology as they prepare and perform a public showcase.

Theatre Arts/Drama Director Arlene Hood has been teaching Theatre Arts at Moreau Catholic since 1987, and served as chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department (VAPA) from 2001 to 2006. During her tenure as department chair, VAPA twice received an excellence award from the California Alliance for Arts Education. She holds a degree in Theatre Arts and a single-subject teaching credential in English. Arlene has also taught choir, musical theatre, stagecraft, Shakespeare, and public speaking at both secondary and college levels.

Moreau theatre students also have received numerous awards and recognitions for their exceptional achievements in theatre arts and music. In 2005, Ms. Hood and her students were national winners for the American High School Theatre Festival and traveled to Scotland to perform Mother Courage and Her Children at the annual Festival Fringe in Edinburgh. She has also traveled and performed with students and alumni in Funabashi, Japan, Nicosia, Cyprus, and Cairo, Egypt.

Arlene has served on the board of the California Educational Theatre Association since 2002, including two terms as its President. Professional development activities have allowed her to study and perform in Cyprus, Italy, Jordan, Scotland and England. In her “spare” time, she enjoys the company of her three dogs, Caterina, Molly, and Jobie, growing a variety of vegetables, traveling, and playing poker.
