Athletic Updates: November 1, 2023
Here is a recap of the Fall sports that have concluded for the Fall 2023 season.
Congratulations to Jamiee Hill and Jenna Bulanadi for earning MVAL Honorable Mention awards. The team competed in the MVAL League Championship tournament this week. The team had tremendous strides this season with improving their win-loss record than last year. With continuing growing numbers, the team has healthy numbers for continued success. The Varsity team finished with an overall team GPA average of 3.28, and half of the varsity team earned NCS Scholar or NCS Presidential academic awards.
Girls’ Water Polo
The Girls’ Water Polo team has wrapped up another success-filled season with their final game being in the MVAL Championship Tournament. The team finished with an overall record of 12-13 which includes league and tournament games. With the season spanning from August to November, the team has worked hard through setbacks and developed significantly. This season brought several moments to celebrate, highlighted by their notable wins against schools such as Encinal and Foothill. Another great moment in the season was in double overtime, sudden death, buzzer-beater win against Livermore. Both teams were battling closely throughout the game, but Moreau emerged victorious with a strong shot by junior Nola K. in the final seconds. With great moments like these, the team can be proud of the accomplishments and challenges that we’ve overcome this season.
Boys’ Water Polo
The Boys’ Varsity Water Polo team has gone through challenges in their season, but their teamwork and dedication has helped them to persevere. Moreau Catholic Boys’ Water Polo team had to adjust to the intensity of the season, learning how to work with each other, swimming fast, strengthening their mindset and balancing outside commitments with water polo. During practices and games, the team works on shooting drills, out-swimming their competitors and creating scoring opportunities by attacking the goal. The team was invested in their own success and their enthusiasm is an insight into the team culture: which is having fun and maintaining a positive mariner mindset.
Girls’ Golf had consecutive record breaking numbers for students coming out to join the team this year. The stacked 18 members that compose both varsity and junior varsity. The Varsity team made strides as they were 4th place overall in the MVAL. The varsity team qualified and played in the NCS Girls’ Division II championship. The team was led by Netra Kumar, who earned herself an MVAL First Team All-League honor, placed 6th in the NCS Girls’ Division II championship, and placed 5th in the NCS Girls’ Division I championship. The Varsity Girls’ Golf team also earned the highest team GPA for all Fall Sports for Moreau Catholic with a 3.55.
“Take one set at a time, there’s no need to rush” was the mentality of the 2023 fall season. With many fresh faces and seasoned veterans returning, the student-athletes worked together to acquire individual and team growth athletically and experience small victories as a group. Girls’ Volleyball held their second inaugural Mariner Girls’ Volleyball Jamborees. JV hosted the first-ever JV Tournament of Championship providing a season-ending tournament for the schools in the MVAL. Improving technical skills, setting, and good communication on the court was important as the team continued to build for future years. The team’s three experienced seniors stepped into their roles as leaders by working hard to teach skills to those new to volleyball while balancing their personal goals for growth.
