Social Justice Charity Elections
Social Justice Leadership has teamed up with GIVING WHAT WE CAN to hold the 2022 Charity Election. Charity Election is a school-wide event in which high school students vote among three charities to decide which will receive up to $2,000 in sponsored funds. The project is designed to inspire meaningful discussions and empowers young people to reflect on complex world issues and realize their potential to make a difference. Social Justice Leaders went to all the Theology classes to present the three charities, and voting started this week. The results of the Charity Election will be announced in the next couple of weeks!
The three charities for this year's election are:
SCI Foundation (formerly known as the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative)
This foundation works with governments in sub-Saharan African countries to develop effective programs to eliminate neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). It focuses on reducing and treating parasitic worm infections—schistosomiasis and intestinal worms.
The Clean Air Task Force (CATF)
CATF is an international nonprofit that promotes technical and policy change for the climate. CATF values pragmatism and believes all promising options should be explored to prevent catastrophic climate change.
This charity makes unconditional cash transfers to people living in extreme poverty. It currently runs several cash transfer programs, including larger (one-time) and smaller monthly transfers to people living in rural African villages; transfers targeting food insecurity in Yemen; cash transfers to refugees; and cash transfers targeting poverty.
