HAYWARD, CA — It was a night of celebration both on and off the diamond at Moreau Catholic High School on Thursday, April 16th, as the Mariners combined a powerhouse offensive performance with a heartwarming community event to defeat the Mission San Jose Warriors 14-4.

Last night’s game had a community-focused theme all-around. It was “Little League” Night, where multiple leagues and softball teams were invited to watch the Mariners play under the lights. The stands were filled with the next generation of athletes, creating an electric environment that buzzed with energy from the first pitch through the final out.

The evening’s festivities officially began when Hayward City Council Member Angela Andrews took to the circle to deliver the honorary first pitch. A prominent leader in the local community, Andrews serves as a Hayward City Council Member and made history in 2020 as the first Black woman elected to the council. Her appearance on the rubber highlights Moreau Catholic’s presence within the Hayward community while also uniting the city’s leadership with the youth programs, providing an inspiring example of service for the young players in attendance.

“Our inaugural little league night was a big success,” said Coach Christian Corona. “It was great to see all the fans and little leaguers out there supporting our program. I know our girls had a blast, as did the little leaguers. The fan support was amazing, and I’m excited to hold this event again next year.”

“I am extremely proud of Coach Christian and the Softball Team overall,” said Tommy Abdenour, Athletic Director of Moreau Catholic. “Yes, the team played well (last night), but they highlighted everything we teach here at Moreau Catholic. We talk about creating a community and being family; we had that at Larry Stanley Field, from Angela Andrews’ first pitch, to the local taco business who was there just for the game, to all of the youth softball programs. It was incredible to see all of the youth softball teams in attendance, seeing their joy watching our team play. That is what it is all about.”

The evening concluded with the highlight of the night for many of the young fans in attendance: the “Post-Game Base Run.” Dozens of youth players took to the field to round the bases, high-fiving the Mariners as they crossed home plate.

Moreau Catholic (3-2 in league play) will look to maintain their position in the conference standings as they prepare for their next road test against American High School this coming Tuesday. Additionally, Moreau Catholic Softball is hosting a Cancer Awareness game on May 7th.
