Five seniors spearheaded a voter pre-registration event for students this past week as part of their senior capstone project. They registered 175 sophomores, juniors and seniors to vote when they are eligible at age 18.
Megan Kane, Danielle Moresi, Spencer Borbon, Elizabeth Musgrove and Kelly Quiambo held the voter registration event on Tuesday and Thursday during lunchtime.
"We felt that students needed to feel empowered, especially after the Florida shootings," Megan said, and "a voter registration event got people talking and didn't divide anyone regardless of their beliefs."
Earlier in the year, the students had heard a guest speaker in Mr. Phil Wilder's class talk about the role of government and the idea for a voter registration event materialized from that interaction.
The students reached out to the Registrar of Voters Office for the State of California and they provided the forms, stickers and pencils.
Megan explained that the completed forms then needed to be sent back to the Registrar of Voters Office within three days of the event.
