Moreau seniors Joseph Robinson and Nicholas Pierce recently received their Eagle Scout Awards from the Boy Scouts of America. Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout is quite an accomplishment – signifying years of work and dedication.

Moreau has named Rob Gatrell as our new head football coach, starting with the 2018-2019 academic year. Gatrell has been an integral part of Moreau's football staff the last six years while also teaching physical education. His experience includes coaching at the collegiate and high school level. He also brings a strong knowledge of football from his professional playing career in the NFL and the Arena Football League.

Moreau President Terry Lee announced today the appointment of Dr. Elizabeth Guneratne as Moreau's Interim Principal, effective July 1, 2018. She succeeds Principal Lisa Tortorich, who announced her retirement earlier this school year. Dr. Guneratne has been a leader in educational transformation on a local and systemic level for the past 17 years, focusing on educational leadership and systemic reform to transform schools and sustain learning communities of excellence and equality.

Moreau's TEDx team of teachers, students, and motivational speakers demonstrated transformation in action on April 17 during the first annual TEDx event, TEDxMoreauCatholicHS, highlighting "Providence and Promise." Student and guest speakers offered their "ideas worth sharing" and took the TEDx stage during four sessions during the day and evening.

Five seniors spearheaded a voter pre-registration event for students this past week as part of their senior capstone project. They registered 175 sophomores, juniors and seniors to vote when they are eligible at age 18.

An extensive network of instruments monitors seismic activity, and Moreau Catholic students are part of a STEM project from QuakeFinder to help record electromagnetic signals when nearby earthquakes occur. With close proximity to the Hayward fault, Moreau was a perfect location for one of their simplified instruments. Students have assembled a "Mini Station" kit and found a convenient location on campus to install air ionization sensors to basically "sniff the air."

Now in its fourth year, Moreau's Mariner Explorers Camps provide an opportunity for middle school students to learn new skills from Moreau faculty. This year's camps run from June 18 through June 28 from 8 a.m. to noon. In the camps designed for 6th through 8th graders, youth can learn how to produce a TV newscast, build a robot, or even write and perform in a play.

Moreau's music ministers recently released Close to You, a CD of new, original songs that can be used in different settings for retreats, liturgies and personal reflection. "Anchored in faith, Close to You is a new branch of liturgical expression," said Patrick Landeza, CD producer and Moreau's associate campus minister for retreats and liturgies. "We hope this music touches the heart and brings renewed life to daily worship."

The winter sports teams of soccer and basketball along with the rally squad worked hard to achieve greatness both in their sport and in their classrooms. 60% of the athletes achieved above a 3.0 GPA for their season, no mean feat when the season stretched from November 6th to March 10th. 128 athletes achieved a 3.0 or better, with 84 earning a 3.5 or better and 28 reaching the pinnacle of 4.0 or better.

Moreau Catholic High School will host a TEDx event, TEDxMoreauCatholicHS, on April 17. The independently organized event, licensed by TED, will celebrate the voices of Moreau students as they share their ideas, passions, and talents following the theme of Providence and Promise.

Moreau's Campus Ministry Team is leading the way this Lenten season with three outreach projects to raise awareness of the needs around us. One project includes selling #CardinalStrong wristbands as a fundraiser for Cardinal Newman High School in its rebuilding efforts after the devastating Tubbs fire.

From February 26-29, 2018, the Moreau Catholic community warmly welcomed six educators from Bay Area Catholic schools who served as the Visiting Committee for the 2018 Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) accreditation. The accreditation process is used to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs, and drive program enhancements and curricular development, and the visit affirms the findings of the school's self-study and its goals and plans for ongoing improvement.

"Be Wise. Be Earthwise" is the motto of Moreau's Earthwise environmental service club. The club currently is busy getting the school's garden ready for growing vegetables, and are looking for parent volunteers.

Moreau senior Sarang Raj recently won SE3D's first bioprinting competition. SE3D, the developer of Moreau's state-of-the-art bioprinters, challenged students to showcase their ingenuity and skills by creating a unique design that was printed on the r3bEL bioprinter. Raj created a medial meniscus design using Autodesk Fusion 360 and from there created a file that the bioprinter was able to read and print

Moreau senior Jordan Seiden, a linebacker on the Mariners' varsity football team, has been selected as a scholar-athlete from the Northern California Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. He is one of 24 honorees from public and private high schools in 12 Northern California counties.

Moreau Catholic alumnus Brian Copeland '82 to perform his critically acclaimed one-man show, "Not a Genuine Black Man," for students and faculty at his alma mater during Unity Week in February. Copeland is an award-winning actor, comedian, author, playwright, television and radio talk show host based in the Bay Area. In November, Copeland spoke to students at a school-wide assembly about his childhood experiences as one of the only African-American families living in San Leandro and the only African-American student at Moreau.

November was a busy month for the Moreau Catholic Mock Trial teams, competing in mock trial scrimmages locally and traveling to New York for the Empire New York Mock World Championships. The Mariner Mock Trial Gold Team finished in the top 20 at the world championships by winning 4 out of 8 ballots. The team also was honored by the championship organizers with the David Post Spirit of Empire Award for outstanding civility and professionalism.

Thirty-four of Moreau's fall athletes received MVAL All League Honors, including Garrett Kaleo Lee '18 as the first Mariner to receive first team all league honors in water polo, junior Adi Anderson being named Most Valuable Offensive Player in football and 5 of the 6 starters in girls volleyball earning first team honors.

The 9th Annual Funding Hopes and Dreams Dinner and Auction will be held Thursday, November 16 at the Fremont Marriott Silicon Valley, 46200 Landing Parkway in Fremont. This annual event benefits the Trust for Student Support, which provides tuition assistance for many Moreau students. The event features Master of Ceremonies Ms. Kathleen Radecke, '85, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Oakland and Keynote Speaker Mr. Guillermo Diaz, Jr., Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Cisco's global information technology organization and services.
