Spring Athletes Excel Both On and Off the Field
Posted 05/22/2018 01:40PM

The eight spring sports teams (track and field, swimming, badminton, softball, baseball, boys' tennis, boys' volleyball and boys' golf) worked hard to achieve greatness both in their sport and in their classrooms.

Of these athletes, 72% achieved above a 3.0 GPA for their season, no mean feat when the season stretched from February to June. Specifically, 285 athletes achieved a 3.0 GPS or better, with 100 earning a 3.5 GPA or better and 83 reaching the pinnacle of 4.0 GPA or better.

Athletically, it was also a great season with six of the eight varsity squads earning a berth in the NCS playoffs. The boys' doubles badminton team of Edwin Shih '19 and Tony Xu '20 were NCS champions. Girls' doubles placed fourth and fifth and mixed doubles placed fifth.

Golfer Ryan Lu '18, who signed to play at Holy Names University next year, placed third in the MVAL tournament, fifth in NCS and 13th in Northern California. Boys' volleyball, with a competitive preseason and tournament schedule, placed fourth in league play, earned the #3 seed in NCS and made it to the semi-final game.

Swimmers qualified two boys' relay teams to NCS, and para swimmer Anais Arreola '21 made it to state where she won two gold medals! In track and field, this was the year of the high-flying pole vaulters with two seniors, Tommy Slakey and Alexis Aquilizan (league champion), earning scholarships to California State University, Fullerton to join Alum Mariah Lark '17. The team had over 100 runners, throwers and jumpers with a contingent of 11 athletes qualifying from NCS to move on to the Meet of Champions, one step before the state meet.

Softball earned the #2 seed in Division III after placing fourth in the MVAL. The team earned a bye in NCS and will play in the quarter finals on May 26, hoping to return to the title game. They accomplished something no team had done since 2003, defeating Logan High School 4-3 in league play.
