Earthwise Club Strives to 'Be Wise and Earthwise'

"Be Wise. Be Earthwise" is the motto of Moreau's Earthwise environmental service club. While the club currently is busy getting the school's garden ready for growing vegetables, they also are advocates for having a greener campus and for raising awareness for environmental issues.

The Moreau garden, located at the back of the campus, was started about three years ago. Since then, the club has removed boxwood shrubs, built a fire path and picnic tables, landscaped the front of the garden with succulents and planted fruit trees along with vegetable and herb boxes.

During the school year, students and parents can be found volunteering, with every Monday after school set aside as a garden work day, where students earn service hours and parents volunteer.

"When parents volunteer, it is such a big help because they bring immense knowledge and experience that the students don't have," Club President Simi Sethupathi said.

"Recently, one of our officer's parents helped us start putting up a fence surrounding our garden. While the process is still underway, it could not have been done with him," Sethupathi added.

Teachers also volunteer, with world language teacher Serena Maniscalco serving as moderator and others such as Coach Andrew Cotter and some of his football players helping with the removal of the boxwoods.

"We grow a variety of vegetables, succulents, flowers and fruit trees, have our own compost bin, and strongly encourage green ways to dispose of trash on campus," Sethpathi said. "We have our tri-bins that make it easy for students to recycle and compost as well as throw away their trash."

When school is out, such as over spring break, the students and Maniscalco help water and prune the plants.

"Nature continues to take its course," Sethupathi said, "so volunteers are also needed so the plants don't die when school isn't in session."

Parent volunteers are encouraged to stop by the garden on Mondays from 3 to 4 to help out.
